On Friday, 11 March 2011, Mel Gibson pleaded guilty to spousal battery charge of striking his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva during an argument in Jan 2010.  In a recorded phone call to his girlfriend, Mel had suggested that if she was to be "raped by a pack of niggers". Mel, a devout Catholic, had a baby girl with his girlfriend even though not married. During this time Mel also had a porn star mistress, Violet Kowal, who alledgedly had sex with Mel at least eight times whilsts his girlfriend was pregnant. In the sexual encounters, Violet claimed that Mel was agressive, violent and demanding. Not exactly Christian, many would say. In the Christian circles, Mel is famous for his Christian themed block buster movies "the Passion of Christ".

In praising his movies, the churches appeared to have overlooked Mel's heterosexual lifestyle (in view of their strong condemnation of gays). In Aug 2006, he separated from his wife of 26 years even though they have 6 sons and 1 daughter together. He had said that his wife was a saint which was probably true as compared to him. Following traditional Catholic beliefs, Mel would have perturbed the feminist claiming in a 1995 playboy interview that men and women are unequal as reasons for rejecting women priests.

When the "Passion of Christ" came to the big screen in 2004, many friends at City Harvest said that they were strongly encouraged to watch it. The Christian Post reported that "Mel Gibson Named 'Most Powerful Christian' in Hollywood"  in Oct 2007. Mel, a Catholic is said by Christian Post to be an outspoken Christian. The website BeliefNet named Gibson as the leading Christian in Hollywood.

 The movie felt uncomfortable. The"spirit" behind the movie, although undefinitive was not right despite the endorsement by the mega churches and Christian post.   Perhaps my spirit was discerning a wrong spirit behind the movie. Mel Gibson later responded to NY Times Frank Rich critique of possible anti-semitism in the movie in a most un-Christ like manner with "I want to kill him. I want his intestines on a stick.... I want to kill his dog". In essence, he was calling the Jews, dogs!

This Spirit of Anti-semitism which is really an anti-Christ spirit reared its head in July 2006 when Mel was arrested for driving under the influence of alchohol. During the arrest process, Mel made very virulent anti-semitic remarks to the arresting officer, James Mee, as he was Jewish. Mel was quoted as saying "Fucking Jews...the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world".  It is important for Christians to be spiritually discrening even though outwardly the movie "Passion of Christ" may be stunning, but the spirit behind it seems anti-Christ.

Yet for all his faults, Mel is at least honest to admit it (belatedly) and that is what makes his character so complex. He is an agressive/demanding/violent alpha male and often such people are passionate but could display so much agression and arrogance, faults which they could not see.He makes a food movie actor but a difficult person to be with or even to have sex with.

However, it took him a long time to admit many of his faults. Mel only recently made peace with the Gay groups after many years being unapologetic of anti-gay remarks reported in the Spanish newspaper El Paishe in 1991. When questioned on his fear that people would think that he was gay for simply being an actor, Mel's reported response was comical:-

"They take it up the ass ... this is only for taking a shit,”

[note: Mel was laughing, stood up, bent over, pointed to his ass, when he said, “This is only for taking a shit.”] 

 "With this look, who's going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?"

Mel was defintely not gay, and his lifestyle of heterosexuality is now for all to see and ponder. He also had counseled Heath Ledger not to accept the role of a gay cowboy in Brokeback mountain in 2008.

The mega churches in Singapore were perhaps confused when they advocated the "Passion of Christ" in 2004. How can they be so spiritually undiscerning? perhaps, they were no better! blaiming the divorces and abortions of the wider community on 5% of the population who are gay for destroying morality and the family. When we put all our sins on the gentle gay lambs to be slaughtered, we can't really see our own sins and this is the slippery slope which will lead Christianity or any church for that matter to disrepute even though they may be mega churches or the billion strong Catholic church.
