Ex 37:4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord. ’” The Charisma magazine, a magazine of charismatic
evangelical persuasion, had a front page article entitled “Do we want a
Gay America”. It was a regurgitation of an anti-gay article by Exodus in
2004 with the details slightly updated. The evil homosexual agenda was
compared to Hitler by what it calls Pro-homosexual leaders. The diatribe of rethoric and false accusations was
quickly taken down when Exodus objected. In a larger perspective, it
reflected how the scene has changed when in 2004 we are free to
perpetuate a false witness against the weak but 8 years later, we are
taken to task by the general public.
The accusation of “pro-homosexual” by Charisma is ingenuous as if we were advocating or enforcing a prescribed gay sexual orientation upon society. Rather, we are advocating that Christianity should
not be militantly anti-gay or to actively insist that it is illegal when
sexual orientation is something innate and born with. It is freedom to be when it was the church who had
insisted that one must be heterosexual. The article by Charisma was a final salvo by a
sinking ship of the Christians as it attempted to resurrect the anti-gay
movement. But as soon as it was fired, the shell returned back to the
sender. The battle is over. However, it was no co-incidence that Charisma
brought up the issue for there has been very strong dismay at the shift
made by Exodus who were once the strongest advocate for reparative
therapy when we can pray away “the gay”. The turn-around by Exodus affirms what we have been
saying all the while, that the ex-gay therapy by the church coupled by
her insistence that gays be put in jail have destroyed and killed
hundreds of thousands of lives.
It meant that the likes of Choices in Singapore, an
agent of Exodus, and the likes of their former ex-gay champions such as
Sy Rogers had been peddling snake oil causing deaths to the people who
ate it for cures. It is presumptuous to say that we know the end.
Yes, we will prevail, but we do not know the backlash of the resultant
harm planted by the Christian church. A few years back, I felt led to chase after a new
visitor as he left the church which I almost never did. I finally caught
up to him and asked him whether we can meet to have a cup of coffee, for
which he smiled and said that it would not be likely he would return. I never saw him again and I heard that he committed
suicide. He made his peace with God that day at church. We have set such
an oppressive and condemning regime for gay people that kills people on
the inside long before they took their own lives. Choices (part of Anglican Church of Our Saviour)
and Exodus would have to make new choices where to cross over for they
have been drowned for crossing a way that God has not parted the
sea. We will not ever know the extent of harm caused and
the lives destroyed The end we will not know because the harm cannot be
swept underneath the carpet of new positional statements which are less
anti-gay and more reconciliatory by Exodus and churches like Hillsongs.
A new day has come. The last decade from 2002 to 2012 has seen a shift away from hiding and being in shame, to coming come out in the general public in society. Gay Christians have yet to come out in numbers even
though churches such as MCC has gone ahead to clear a Christian
theological path in the wilderness in the last 30 years. When a queer church in Singapore had its dialog
between gays and ex-gays proponents in 2007, the ex-gay advocates knew
not that the end was nigh for when we look out the hallowed halls of the
church meeting that day, we see gays in their teens walking in the
street hand in hand. The next few years, will be a year a Jubilee where
Christian gays will come out of the closet and from hiding. It will also
be a number tumultuous years for the church with much shaking, pruning
and cleansing when they have to “let my people go” one way or another. The number of young gay Christians is starting to
come out in droves. For the stone has been rolled away and one by one
they would have to make choices to step out by faith to reclaim their
destiny of how God has created them as a Gay person. I believe that the word of God to GLBT Christians today is that you are free. The latter rain of God is coming. The dry ground of our souls and spirit will be filled. We are thirsty Lord. Come Lord Jesus.
