|There can be miracles when you believe
In 04 Nov 2004, when Bush won the Election, we prophesied that it was a victory for the Christian Right but the war will ultimately be lost ( bush elected & 11 states banned gay marriages). The Republicans with their big business and religious right support seemed to have won the day. We stated also, that the big businesses that had supported the Republicans will suffer a strong down turn in the next 4 years. In Jan 04, the exchange was 1.7 SGD to 1 USD, and today, it is 20 % lower at 1.37 SGD. Oil prices has increased more than 300%, from USD35 per barrel to far above USD100. The American people are suffering from a strong devaluation of the property.
What is happening? The Christian Right will claim that this is due to the God's judgment because of Homosexuality, but they have banned it so how could it be an issue. Furthermore, other countries which have accepted it such as the Nordic countries have done much better economically. Ironically, what the Christian Right says may be true, it is God's "judgment", perhaps on the Christian Right and the Catholic Church which has also suffered falls by many tele-evangelists (Ted Haggard, Lonnie Latham), and billions of dollars in compensation for sexually abusing children during the last four years. (the biggest case happened in July 2007, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay USD 660 million to victims).
Four years later, a different landscape is emerging. As the day draws near from the point of what seems to be of return when Gay tribe will be set free and have the same rights as their straight counterparts in California, the Christian Right Groups are appealing to the Supreme Court for a stay of execution at least until the Nov elections where they intend to use the ballot to over ride the courts decision and maintain the special Rights for the Christian Extremists. The task of overturning the Court's verdict through the ballot, once a certainty now becomes uncertain with the polls after the Supreme Court decision showing a big jump in support of Gay marriages.
Although, the Rev John Hagee claims that Gays are tortured and angry, the reverse seems to be true as the Christian Right and their supporters are now tortured by the possibility of a domino effect onto other states once there is the realization that giving 5% of the population equal rights is a good thing. With the changing public opinion, any further in-roads to maintain their special rights is unlikely in the next election, with the future elections look likely to overturn all their insidious extremist agenda.
The Christian Right in a panic mode now, have resorted to false witness - in particular using figures of the Nordic countries showing that after the Gay marriages were accepted in those countries, the percentage of children born in wed lock increased. This simple logic does seem to fool the simple minded supporters but not the prudent. The figures for the children born out of wedlock has been increasing over the number of years without Gay marriages, and it continued to increase after gay marriages. This is not surprising since this relates to the straight community with no apparent link to gays. Interestingly, the advent of the Gay Marriages seems to drastically reduce the rate of children born in wedlock. It seems that Gay marriages do have a positive impact on the straight community. The Christian Right's argument will again be used over and over again around the world and in Singapore, even though even with anyone with an average intelligence would see no connection and those who are prudent would see the evil scheme and agenda of the religious right.
Both sides of the divide may be sincere and honest people, but this is not a reflective theological debate but one that impacts the basic rights and dignity of a very large minority group. Whilst there is and was grace, there is judgment. The Egyptians were adamant that they would not release the Jewish people from captivity. The Egyptians and their gods, represents the World and the religious system therein. Even through the 10 plaques, their hearts remained adamant until the deaths of their first born. When the Children of Israel finally exited from Egypt and free to be a nation and a tribe, their Egyptians slave masters went after them and lost their army. In summary, Egypt lost their worldly treasures, their most treasured first born, and their might - all went down and flooded by the water when the red sea split to let the children of Israel passed, but the same waters drowned them.
The Supreme Court decision has indeed been a miracle and as Gays now move from their closets into the promised land when they can marry, we have the Christian fundamentalist soldiers chasing after them in order to stop their freedom. Thus saith the Lord, "the flood is coming, and the flood has come, over all those that have put the gay community in the closets and adamantly refused to let my people go". Over the next 12 years, there will be a flood from California that will sweep the states after states, and not only gays will gain their basic rights, but the Christian Right will be paying for their cruel and evil heart. Because they have taken away the very basic rights of gays, what they most treasured will be taken away from them, just as the actions of the Egyptians to go after the Jewish people led to the lost of what they treasured most - their gold, silver, first born, and military might.
As the gays passed through the waters of the red sea, through their baptism of fire, into the land of freedom, if the Christian Right remain adamant to continue to pursue this issue, then the waters will come down and drown them. Let my people go saith the Lord of Host. It is not that God judges the Christian Right, for they are stiffed neck, and in their insistent persecution of gays will find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time despite so much of God's grace. There are three things that are most precious that may be drowned:-
a) the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit
b) the power miracles of the Holy Spirit
c) the Grace of God
When Christian Right condemns the Gay Community, in the long run, the spot light returns to our self righteousness and lack of God's love, grace and mercy.
Jesus was tempted only once when He was offered the whole earth if only He bowed down to the principality. When the Principality did not manage to tempt Jesus, He basically left it to bible believing religious people to do the job. The Pharisees hounded Jesus wherever He went, always finding fault, asking difficult questions, and trying to tempt Jesus to say and do the wrong in order to persecute Him. The Principalities need not try to influence the religious, it was natural for them to be mean hearted, without grace not mercy and full of judgment. They knew the scriptures well, remembered it by heart, but did not understand the revelation of the bible - because revelation come not from a self righteous heart, but one that is contrite, humble, and open to the truth, and one in deep communion with God.
The first Christians were Jewish and they took a long time to come out of the religious mindset they were in especially concerning the adherence to the Jewish laws. But they were able through Paul's very strong teachings to understand the grace of God in Christ and the fulfillment of the requirements of the Law in Christ. As they let go of their closets, Christianity grew.
Gays may gain increasing freedoms, but we will not have gained true freedom until we are spiritually and emotionally free. Many are living in self imposed closets and the wrong religious mindset perpetuated by the Christian Right and their proxies such as Exodus and Focus on Family. The harm that the Christian Right has done will be very long lasting and the effort for Christianity to gain a foothold in this tribe will be difficult just as Christianity had never gained a following in the Arab countries because the wounds left 1000 years ago by those who killed and pillaged in the name of Christianity is forever embedded in the minds and culture of the people. There is now the long and winding road up the mountain, to go beyond the clouds and to see God without the clutter of religion, to see Christ with His arms of acceptance. Few would want to climb this road, for it is a road of immense conflict of forgiving those who has caused so much deaths, pain and suffering, yet without remorse nor retribution.
The Black Community gained freedom in the 60s and 70s, but for many their lives had not changed. They had succumbed to the danger of becoming what they hated most. The road to freedom is tough, and one should not become to identify with our adversaries. The Jews in Egypt, could not move into their freedom because they still identified with the lifestyle and foods they ate in Eqypt whilst they were in captivity. This hindered them from reaching out to a better destiny of the much more abundant food crops in the promised land. They also had found identity with the Egyptian and Philistine gods, hence could not move out of their closet to embrace the God who had led them out of their bondage. Although, we deny it, we take on so much of those who had persecuted us, even many of their beliefs. The Black Community for example is one of the most anti-gay groups and that must change if they were ever to break out of their own closets. Their rejection of the freedom the gay community will hinder spiritually and morally their own journey to freedom.
God honors His Word even when Christians do not. We have put road blocks against the Spirit of God to move into the Gay community to bring the Good News of God's Grace and Salvation. As Christians, we have put up the wall of condemnation and rejection that Gays are sinners because they are gays and not because they do not believe in Jesus Christ. The Gates of Hades will never overcome the good news of the Gospel, by faith alone. The message must go forth to be preached to every people's group. It is God's move to release the Gay tribe out of bondage and the closets that Christians and Religion have put them in, that they might come to worship Him. Though "Christians" may not like it (only 24% support Gay marriage - Field Poll, May 26), Gays have waited for 2000 years that salvation may come to this community, and it will not be denied them.
As the "Christian Army" marches in after the fleeing Gay tribe, the good news is that the gay issue will fade away just as the Egyptians had few dealings thereafter with the Jews. Our Senior Minister has wisely said "Let it evolve", but if we are too slow, we will be flooded. The bad news is that even as more and more Christian denomination come to accept Gays as a given and a few may even join in the gay pride, it is a spiritual and moral issue for the Christians and not for gays anymore. The stand against gays will impact many generations to come. It is time for Christians to ask for forgiveness and mercy like never before, for their own sake, unless we are desperate to drown and self destruct whilst the gay tribe reached their promised land and will never look back again.
