Clobber 4 - 1 Tim 1:10

(1 Tim 1:9 NKJV) knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

(1 Tim 1:10 NKJV) for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

The word for sodomy here is translated as "arsenokoites". We have earlier seen that the use of this term is very rare in the ancient literature. The word is formed from two words meaning "male" and "bed" which translated incorrectly as Homosexuals or Sodomites. In the same way as "Ladykiller" makes up of two words, it has a very different meaning when joined together. It could be translated as a lady who kills, or one who kills a lady. But the real meaning of "a man unusually attractive to women" has no bearing at all on the individual words. In context of 1 Tim 1:9,10 where all the vices are described, a more correct interpretation may be wicked sexual abusers.

(1 Tim 1:3 NKJV) As I urged you when I went into Macedonia; remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

The book of 1 Tim was written by Paul to Timothy concerning sound doctrine. Timothy must have had a hard time coming against those who maintained and teaches the law. (1 Tim 1:9) not knowing that the purpose of the law is to convict those who are unrighteous their wrong doings. What did the law achieved? It highlight the sin of men cultimating in 1 Tim 1:9-10. Therefore law does not bring people freedom. Only with grace in Christ Jesus comes true freedom.

The book of 1 Tim was also a reflection of the upcoming challenges to this gospel of grace. New doctrines will be postulated from the depths of hell to deceive people. They will be characterized by the return to a law based doctrine where there are a series of laws which are demanded to be obeyed by the priests yet they do not do so. The love of money will also be prevalent resulting in sin and greediness.

Today, the Christian Right is essentially law based and money minded. That which Paul warned has become a reality. The Alabama Chief Justice was suspended in Aug 2003 for defying a federal court order to move a Ten commandments monument. They mistakenly believed that a lifeless stone is a statement of acknowledging God. In the Bush administration, tax payers money are used indirectly to maintain Christian right groups. The Christian Right leaders, are shrewd businessmen and politicians, who will stop at nothing to advance their grab for power and money
